Chapter 99: Cook’s Death

Jump to Chapter 99.2 Update

Cook’s expression grew even icier. ”Isaac, don’t be too pleased with yourself just yet. Don’t forget that those who stay in Juli Corporation must be the most trustworthy. Otherwise, none of us will be able to return to the human world smoothly if the other side refuses to send us an acceptance code.”

“You mean not even Dr. Ron is trustworthy? If that’s the case, then my suggestion for you is to return to Juli Corporation before Mr. Eton crosses over. With you there, we won’t have to worry about not being able to get back.”

“Do you think I’ll fall for your plan? Once I leave this place, who’s going to protect Father when he arrives?” Cook questioned in a cold voice.

“Aren’t I still here?”

“You are the least trustworthy one,” Cook sneered.

“If Mr. Eton is the only one who has the execution code for crossing the magnetic field, then of course I have to ensure he lives, or else there would be no way for me to go back to the human world.” Isaac tucked his hands in his pockets as he came to the security camera monitor and looked out over the endless desert with a self-deprecating smile. “Or did you think I’d be content with being crowned king of a world with nothing to it?”

After dropping her gaze in thought for a moment, Cook sent a request to Juli Corp’s headquarters.

That very same night, Dr. Cook crossed back to Juli Corp.

Jiang Jinghang, who had learned of this news, rushed to Isaac Eton’s office, and just as he was about to grab Isaac’s collar, he was easily countered by him and pinned to the desk.

Jiang Jinghang’s face was pressed against the desk and the pain in his shoulder made him turn pale.

Isaac showed a slight smile and leaned over. “Dr. Jiang, if you didn’t have a good head on your shoulders, I really would kill you.”

“Isaac Eton! You’re the one who told Cook to return to Juli Corporation! You know what the first thing she’ll do is once she goes back!” Jiang Jinghang’s eyes reddened and his whole body trembled with anger.

“Of course I know. The first thing she’ll do is get rid of Song Zhi once and for all.” Isaac let go of Jiang Jinghang and pushed him away.

Jiang Jinghang fell to the ground in a sorry state.

He looked back and saw Isaac calmly take out a bottle of red wine, the crimson liquid sliding down the side of the glass. It was a ghastly sight in Jiang Jinghang’s eyes.

“But this time… there’s no telling who is the hunter, and who is the prey.”

Just at this time, the communication device on Isaac’s desk sounded a notification.

“Sir, Mr. Eton is about to arrive at the base.”

Isaac pulled up a smile, tilted his head back, and drank the red wine in his glass in one gulp.

He came in front of Jiang Jinghang and looked down, his voice an amicable tone, “Dr. Jiang, Mr. Eton is also considered your father, isn’t he? Shouldn’t you act a little happier that your father has come to see you?”

Jiang Jinghang gritted his teeth and stood up, following Isaac to the control center.

The elites of the entire base were gathered here. The atmosphere was tense as everyone stood ready.

Li Qian was calibrating the data with a serious expression, and even the snacks that that were usually spread over his desk had been tidied up. His eyes were bloodshot from keeping them open for too long.

The energy bar of the shuttle bay rose to a critical level and as the magnetic field turned on, it sucked in everything around it, currents criss crossing each other in a frightening way.

Everyone knew the importance of this shuttle, and should anything go wrong, all those who were present would no longer have the option of returning to their original world.

Amidst the thrum of heartbeats, the top of the shuttle pod gradually appeared and eventually, it came into view completely. When all the data values stabilized, everyone, including Li Qian, let out a breath.

The hatch opened and a wheelchair was pushed out.

Li Qian’s choked on his saliva. He knew that he was about to meet the one who controlled Juli Corp, he who stood at the top!

Isaac smiled impassively and walked up to help the assistant wearing white gloves push the wheelchair out.

This Mr. Eton was completely different from the one in Li Qian’s imagination. He was dressed in a very English manner, and although he was sitting in a wheelchair, he did not give off a sickly or weak impression at all. With a warm smile on his face, he looked to be between fifty and sixty, but from what Li Qian knew, he was already ninety years old.

Mr. Eton looked up at Isaac. “Is it ready?”

“Everything has been prepared.” Isaac, who was usually unhurried and indifferent to everything, revealed a rare, serious expression.

“Well then, let’s set off now.”

“Sir… do you not need to rest?” Isaac frowned.

“I’ll be able to rest for a long time when I die. But while my spirits are high, we should hasten to do what needs to be done.” Mr. Eton’s aquamarine eyes looked at Isaac, seemingly calm but like the eye of a storm, ready to destroy Isaac.

Isaac made a deferential gesture. “Then, I’ll get the helicopter ready to go now.”

Mr. Eton nodded then swept his gaze over Isaac’s shoulder to land on Jiang Jinghang, who was standing quietly in the crowd.

He raised his hand at Jiang Jinghang, who gulped and walked over, taking Mr. Eton’s palm.

“Jinghang, my child… I haven’t seen you in so long. You still haven’t grown up.”

Jiang Jinghang’s shoulders subconsciously trembled.

“If only you could be obedient like Cook, I wouldn’t have to come here in person.”

Jiang Jinghang drew in a breath, but before he could take even half a step back, Mr. Eton tightened his grip and pulled him in.

“With Cook absent, why don’t you accompany me on a trip to the Great Ice Rift Valley? After all, you’re the best virologist out of all my children.”

“Yes, Father.” Jiang Jinghang spoke with difficulty.

Mr. Eton nodded, and only then did he let go of Jiang Jinghang.

As if he had lost his strength, Jiang Jinghang almost fell over, but luckily, Isaac held him up by the arm.

Isaac smiled and looked at Jiang Jinghang somewhat meaningfully, then said, ”Your esteemed father knows everything. He should know exactly what you did behind his back.”

“So… after Song Zhi, now it’s my turn?”

Jiang Jinghang was well aware of “Father’s” tricks.

He could act exceedingly affectionate, demonstrating his love and care in every possible way. Jiang Jinghang still remembered being held in his arms as a child, and how patiently he had fed snacks. Even when a whole piece of cheese fell on him, he didn’t get angry at all. Instead, he kissed Jiang Jinghang’s forehead and told him, “When you are my child, if you wanted the stars in the sky, I would pluck them for you. But when you are no longer my child, I wouldn’t give you a single breath.”

At that time, Jiang Jinghang did not yet understand the meaning of those words, but when Song Zhi’s remains were carried back by Wu Yun, he finally understood.

“Don’t overthink it.” Isaac flicked Jiang Jinghang’s head with his finger.

Their party changed into thick, warm clothing and took off from the base.

This time, the helicopters were equipped with several times more sonic shells than before, but everyone was well aware that it would still be very dangerous if they encountered a swarm of flying organisms.

Jiang Jinghang tightened his seatbelt and turned to the side to look out at the desert that stretched on, sloping in the wind. It wasn’t himself that he was worried about, but Song Zhi.

At this time, Cook had already arrived at Juli Corp, and when she exited the shuttle bay, Dr. Ron was waiting for her in a long white lab coat.

“Where is Song Zhi?” Cook asked in a cold voice.

“He’s in the research lab that Mr. Eton specially arranged for him. He can’t go anywhere but the lab. It’s closed off to ordinary individuals.” Ron struggled to follow behind Dr. Cook, who was walking briskly. A cold sweat had already broken out on his back.

He was well aware of Cook’s loyalty to Mr. Eton, and if anyone harbored the slightest intention of betraying Juli Corp, Cook would eradicate them without mercy.

“That’s because Song Lin’s blood directly entered his brain, allowing the cells there to evolve! Mr. Eton conducted an IQ test on him and his score was one-fifth higher than before!”

Ron’s explanation didn’t convince Cook. Instead, her expression grew even frostier.

“So he obtained the power of an S rank organism! That makes him even more dangerous. Ron… sending him to the human world was perhaps the worst decision we could have made.”

Killing intent appeared in Cook’s eyes.

“We conducted a polygraph test on him and scanned his neural activity! He really doesn’t remember Song Lin’s existence! He really doesn’t remember those things! He’s already regressed to a state where he respects Juli Corp and Mr. Eton!”

“No… there’s no way he can regress to that kind of state! He accepted Song Lin’s power, which means the resonance between him and Song Lin will never end unless his brain no longer functions!” Cook yanked Ron to his feet with one hand and pushed him hard.

Ron stumbled and then felt something against his back. It was Cook’s gun!

Ron gulped as his back stiffened. He never imagined that Cook was this determined to kill Song Zhi.

“Walk! Don’t try anything funny! You know I don’t have much patience!”

Ron could only keep his composure and move forward.

The doors slid open to rows of bodyguards standing watch. Cook turned and took Ron’s arm while the gun was pressed against Ron’s side, hidden by her arm.

The two stepped into the elevator without arousing the suspicions of any bodyguards.

Juli Corporation was a metal fortress with polished floors that mirrored Ron and Cook’s images.

Everything appeared cold and orderly.

When the elevator doors closed, Ron couldn’t help but tremble.

“Which floor?”

Ron stretched out a finger and pressed the button for the lowest floor. His fingerprint scan was accepted and an iris scan was activated while the elevator sank.

“Father still needs Song Zhi. If you kill him, Father won’t forgive you,” Ron warned in a shaky voice.

“He’s like opium poppy, so of course I need to get rid of him before Father becomes even more dependent on him.”

The elevator doors opened to a gloomy area. Cook was well aware that without Ron’s access command, she would activate an infrared laser that could cut up anything that came close with a single step.

With such careful defenses, Mr. Eton really had no intention of letting Song Zhi leave.

They walked through the long and cold passageway to the door of the lab. Ron took a breath then extended his palm and pressed it against the door.

After his palm scan was recognized, the passcode device unlocked. Ron then entered a code and the door to the lab opened.

This was a top secret zone dozens of meters underground and it was supplied with the most advanced research equipment from Juli Corp.

Cook immediately saw a long white lab coat on the seat in front of a holographic computer desk.

There was a rich aroma of coffee in the air that Cook could instantly tell was Song Zhi’s favorite.

Cook nudged Ron with her gun, signaling for him to speak.

Ron took a small step inside and spoke in a strained voice, “Song Zhi, are you there?”

“If I’m not, could I have vanished into thin air?” Song Zhi’s voice was as cold as ever, but there was a hint of calm and composed indifference. “I’m making coffee, do you want some?”

Ron looked sideways at Cook, who tilted her chin.

“Oh… sure.”

Ron walked to coffee maker with Cook silently following behind him, but they found that there wasn’t anyone in front of the coffee maker in the first place!

Cook’s reflexes kicked in and she looked to her left just as a coffee cup flew in her direction, splashing the near-boiling brown liquid in the cup everywhere. Cook instinctively reached out her mechanical arm to block it, but there was a disturbance in the air and someone kicked her hard on her mechanical arm. That powerful force jolted Cook and made her stumble backwards, but the figure had already leaped into the air. Stepping on her mechanical arm from above, it caused her finger that was on the gun to press down. The bullet that was shot out bounced off the metal wall, nearly hitting Ron.

Immediately after that, they grabbed Cook’s wrist, and applying force between her thumb and forefinger, they unarmed her.

Cook then realized that that person was actually Song Zhi!

Song Zhi held the gun while staring at her coldly, as if he was looking at a specimen suspended in formalin.

Such skill… wasn’t like Song Zhi at all!

“You really…”

Before Cook could speak, Song Zhi shot several times in succession. Cook’s reacted quickly, desperately running and dodging, even to the point of running up along the smooth metal wall. The bullets were hitting just beneath her feet and could take her life at any moment. It lasted until Song Zhi used up the bullets. She was about to grab Dr. Ron, who was covering his head and hiding against the wall, as a hostage, but she didn’t expect Song Zhi to grab Dr. Ron before her. “Lock the door!” Song Zhi said in a cold voice.

Dr. Ron had long since turned pale with fear and had no idea what was going on.

Song Zhi went ahead and pressed his hand against the wall. An alarm sounded and the entrance was locked.

Then Song Zhi immediately turned on some sort of contraption and pushed Dr. Ron inside.

It was a narrow space where Ron would neither be hit by bullets nor injured. The casing of the device was transparent and Ron was able to see everything that was happening clearly.

Both the expression on Song Zhi’s face and the tone of his voice were still the same as how Ron remembered them, but there was something else there that was completely foreign to him.

Cook fixed him with a stare and gritted her teeth. ”You really have deceived Father. You remember everything that happened in Nibelungen!”

Song Zhi didn’t throw away the gun in his hand, but instead, he lowered his gaze to look at the magazine at Cook’s hip. “You want to kill me, so I’m going to kill you first. This has nothing to do with whether I’m loyal to Father or if I remember everything that happened in Nibelungen.”

Just as Cook was about to attack Song Zhi, Song Zhi unexpectedly struck first. He sidestepped and quickly slid to Cook’s feet, cracking Cook’s left leg with a vicious kick. Cook fell to one knee but punched at Song Zhi’s chest with her mechanical arm.

Song Zhi raised his hand and blocked it, then the two began to battle for power.

Ron forgot to breathe as he watched.

Song Zhi’s expression sharpened as he suddenly sidestepped and elbowed Cook’s shoulder. With a crack, Cook’s shoulder was dislocated.

Almost instantly, Song Zhi removed the magazine from her hip. He got back up while deftly loading it, then he stood over Cook, gun pointed at her.

His finger was on the trigger and his expression remained cold and indifferent, like a god of death who held the power of life and death in his hands.

Cook looked at him with her eyes wide open. She hadn’t anticipated this happening at all.

“Tell me, do you remember what happened in Nibelungen or not?” Cook asked.

Cook tried to escape, but the leg bone that had been shattered by Song Zhi’s kick hadn’t healed yet and she simply didn’t have enough strength. The bullet shot into her abdomen.

She lowered her head to look at the blood that was seeping into her clothes as if she was refusing to accept this reality.

“Impossible… This is impossible…”

Song Zhi lowered his hand and looked at Cook. It had been Cook’s bullet, which contained a neurotoxin. Even if Cook had a strong healing ability, the introduction of the neurotoxin was fatal.

She soon found it hard to breathe and clutched at her neck, feeling the life draining out of her body, bit by bit.

She looked at Song Zhi, remembering when she had sent Dr. Daniel to finish him off with a shot to the head. Song Zhi had avoided her head on purpose!

“This is death. You can experience it properly on behalf of your father. This is the process human beings must go through, one no one can refuse.”

Song Zhi undid the holster at Cook’s waist and took his time fixing it to himself. He then slid the gun in and walked over to the chair to put his lab coat on.

Gradually, Cook stopped breathing, her pupils dilated, and the hand she had clasped around her throat dropped.

Song Zhi opened the contraption and Ron fell out.

He jogged to Cook’s side, confirmed her pulse and heartbeat, then dropped to the floor. “My God! You really killed her! You really killed Cook!”

“Didn’t I tell you I was going to take care of her?” Song Zhi calmly returned to his seat and continued to do his research.

“No, no, no… you did say to me that you were going to take care of her… but I thought you would devise a trap… not go ahead and take her out for good!”

“What did you think would happen?”

“She’s not going to suddenly wake up, is she?” Ron asked with a worried frown.

“Of course not. The bullets containing the neurotoxin will destroy her healing ability and kill the cells throughout her body.” Song Zhi’s slender fingers quickly tapped over the keyboard.

“So what do we do next?” Ron asked with his arms crossed.

“We wait. Once our people return from the other side, we can seize control of Juli Corp.” Song Zhi retrieved a flash drive hanging from his neck. “This is a program Li Qian designed. With it, we can export information on all of Juli Corp’s illicit operations and send it to the dignitaries of various countries.”

“The most wonderful time is when the tower falls. It’s just… you’re so skilled. Where did you learn those moves? You were sent here right after you woke up and I haven’t seen you practicing.” Ron revealed an inquisitive expression.

Song Zhi merely replied, “Besides research, I often watch movies.”

“What kind of movies?”

“Action movies. That’s how I study. Haven’t you seen The Matrix?”

Song Zhi’s counter sounded so justified that Ron was actually left speechless.

At this moment, Juli Corp’s helicopter team had already crossed the ocean and reached the other side of the continent.

It was a pure white world of ice and snow. As seen from above, glaciers were left shattered left and right, as if they had experienced a shocking catastrophe.

They flew over the entire Great Ice Rift Valley without finding any trace of Di Xin.
