Chapter 100: Isaac’s Trap
Very quickly, they found a giant pit that had been formed on impact not far from the Great Ice Rift Valley.
Isaac and Mr. Eton immediately took a helicopter there.
They stopped at the edge of the pit with the cold polar wind howling as if it would overturn their helicopter at any second.
“Mr. Eton! Signs of life have been found at the bottom of the pit! Also…” A researcher brought a computer up to Mr. Eton.
It was a behemoth of a monster, sinuous and undulating, yet it also seemed to be badly injured.
Mr. Eton’s pupils trembled as he recognized it immediately. “This is an S rank organism! This is Di Xin!”
“But his vital signs are weak and he seems to be dying.”
Isaac, who was wearing wind-resistant goggles, chuckled after looking around, “It looks like someone else was here before us.”
“Who?” Mr. Eton asked.
Issac pointed down along the chasm of the rift that extended from the distance into the deep pit and said, “This was clearly left behind from striking Di Xin. If I’m not wrong, it should be Song Lin or Mo Ye’s power that was unlocked. Di Xin took a major hit. Dr. Jiang and I had already suspected that Di Xin was infected with the virus, and now it seems like he was indeed hiding in the Great Ice Rift Valley to reduce the activity level of the virus in his body through its low temperature.”
Mr. Eton smiled, “If he’s also infected with the virus, then does that mean I can obtain his power like how Turin obtained the death dahlia?”
“In theory, yes.”
“Let’s go down there.”
“Sir, it’s very dangerous,” Isaac cautioned.
“No more dangerous than death.” Mr. Eton’s eyes held suppressed longing.
His body trembled with impatience.
The helicopter landed at the bottom of the pit and they approached the giant silver-white creature. It was a fluid, elegant figure brimming with power. One could only imagine how graceful and imposing it would look soaring through the heavens.
“This is truly God’s masterpiece…” Eton exclaimed with sincerity. He instinctively directed his wheelchair forward, eager to communicate with it.
Isaac grabbed his wheelchair and said in a low tone, “Sir, it’s dangerous, please don’t get any closer.”
“He’s dying… It doesn’t seem to be the effect of the virus… He should have been attacked by another powerful organism. We’re very lucky; if he were still in his prime, he could have easily killed us all!”
“Yes, sir,” Isaac replied.
“You must do what needs to be done while he is still alive.”
“Of course.”
Jiang Jinghang stood not too far away, gazing at the fading S rank organism. He couldn’t help but wear a look of pity. At the same time, a trace of happiness welled up deep inside him. The fact that Song Lin was able to seriously injure Di Xin meant that he was alive and kicking.
Isaac retrieved a special gun, stepped back to a safe distance, and aimed it at Di Xin’s spine. He then pulled the trigger.
The bullet carrying a certain kind of fluid shot through the air, bringing up a draft to the bodyguards standing on the sides. The bullet shot into Di Xin’s body, causing him to struggle with his last breath. The bullet contained Mr. Eton’s blood and it quickly spread in Di Xin’s body as if it would overwhelm him.
His silver-white body glowed a golden hue and they could see the veins of his body filling with a dark red liquid.
Eton watched the scene in fascination, his hands tightly gripping the sides of his wheelchair.
The entire ice field trembled as Di Xin’s mournful cry rang out like a low roar.
The resonance from the ice caused everyone to instinctively get down and cover their ears. It even triggered an avalanche in the distant snowy mountains.
“Di Xin’s body has fully accepted Mr. Eton’s blood. We can collect his spinal fluid and blood now,” Isaac beckoned.
In principle, Mo Ye’s blood was genetically compatible with Zhou Yu’s because he had grown up feeding on his blood, so if Zhou Yu’s body came into contact with Mo Ye’s blood, Mo Ye could easily infect his cells and facilitate his evolution. The same principle also applied to Song Zhi.
Even though Di Xin was already on his last breath, no one dared to step forward.
Mr. Eton grew desperate, and with bloodshot eyes, he suddenly whipped out his gun and shot one of the bodyguards who hesitated to step up.
“His spinal fluid and blood must be drawn while he’s still alive!” Eton yelled.
Isaac smiled indifferently and retrieved the gun-like sampler from the dead bodyguard’s hand. Like climbing a boulder, he came to the top of Di Xin’s head and shot it in.
His spinal fluid and blood were drawn.
Isaac watched coldly as the golden hue over Di Xin’s body gradually receded. His silver-white body lost its luster like a snuffed-out lamp, until at last, it turned ashy.
“What good does believing yourself to be so powerful do?” Isaac sighed softly and slid off the body, landing firmly on the ground.
At this point, Mr. Eton could not contain his excitement.
The fleet of helicopters headed back.
The snow that had tumbled down from the mountain tops came flooding into the cave like a tidal wave, completely burying Di Xin.
At this time, Zhou Yu was having his blood drawn in front of Professor Chen, preparing for Mo Ye’s complete unlocking.
Watching Zhou Yu’s blood enter a storage device through a tube, Mo Ye sat across from Zhou Yu with his chin propped up and his throat a little tight.
“What’s wrong?” Zhou Yu asked with a sideways glance.
“I’m starving. I want to eat you whole.” Mo Ye stuck out the tip of his tongue and licked his lips.
Zhou Yu reached out his left hand and swatted Mo Ye’s head. “What nonsense.”
Zhou Yu pumped out much more blood than what Song Zhi had provided in this one sitting, but with the nutrient injections Isaac had left him, he recovered quickly.
“Do you know why Song Lin left Di Xin with his last breath?” Mo Ye squinted his eyes, revealing an expression as lazy as a cat’s.
“Because he’s different from Di Xin. He was raised with human morals, and Di Xin is his biological father. He holds himself to human standards and won’t commit patricide.”
“Is that all?”
“It’s also… to attract the attention of Eton, Juli Corporation’s chairman,” Zhou Yu replied.
“Do you think he accomplished his goal?” Mo Ye asked again.
“Who knows.” Zhou Yu finished the nutrient injection and released his rolled-up sleeves.
Just as Zhou Yu got up, Mo Ye suddenly yanked him back. As Zhou Yu leaned down, Mo Ye’s voice rang in his ears.
“Are you really sure you won’t let me eat?”
“You’d better go eat the sandwiches Rong Zhou made.”
“Those could poison someone.” Mo Ye revealed a pitiful expression.
Three days later, Juli Corp’s research on Di Xin’s blood and spinal fluid achieved a breakthrough.
Jiang Jinghang delivered the pink medicinal solution to Mr. Eton.
Jiang Jinghang stood quietly to the side as if he was awaiting judgment.
Eton smiled and looked to the side at Isaac.
Isaac understood and drew out a vial of the medicinal solution before injecting it into his veins.
All the people involved in the research looked in Isaac’s direction. This wasn’t just Isaac testing their research; if Isaac showed any abnormalities, Eton would probably kill them all.
Isaac closed his eyes and suddenly fell to the ground with an expression of intense pain.
The researchers cried out for help in horror and Han Li brought in a medical team to assist him, but after only a few minutes, Isaac stopped breathing.
Han Li tried everything, but nothing could save him as his body grew cold. Han Li looked at Mr. Eton. “Isaac… he’s dead…”
The anticipation in Eton’s eyes had gone out and was now covered with a layer of frost. He turned to look at Jiang Jinghang and said in a steady but oppressive voice, “My child, I know very well how smart you are. Are you doing this… because you want to kill me?”
Fear welled up in Jiang Jinghang’s heart, but he tried to calm himself down.
“Please believe me, Father. Zhou Yu had the same symptoms after being infected by the virusβhis breathing and heartbeat stopped completely, but after being declared dead by the resuscitators, he abruptly woke up twenty-four hours later. Now Isaac is going through that same process where his human immune system is fighting the virus and the virus carrying Di Xin’s genes into his body is infecting all of his cells, allowing him to obtain Di Xin’s power. His immune system and his self-healing system need to clash and wear each other down in order to adapt to one another.”
The icy coldness in Eton’s eyes faded. “Then we shall wait twenty-four hours. If Isaac still isn’t awake by this time tomorrow, I think you know what to expect.”
“Of course,” Jiang Jinghang nodded.
The surrounding researchers exhaled in unison.
Isaac was sent into a medical room where Han Li monitored his temperature.
“You should have looked for a chance to get out of here earlier.” Han Li adjusted various instruments while whispering to Jiang Jinghang. “Isaac might actually be dead. After all, his situation is different from Zhou Yu’s. Mo Ye was fed Zhou Yu’s blood from birth while Di Xin was only injected with Mr. Eton’s blood moments before he died.”
“But I can’t leave now. Let’s finish what we’ve always wanted to do, to the end.” The resolution in Jiang Jinghang’s gaze was firm.
Han Li smiled knowingly.
Night faded and dawn arrived.
It was inching closer to the hour Mr. Eton had set for Jiang Jinghang and Jiang Jinghang continued his research calmly until Isaac, who was lying on the bed with his body stiff, started to struggle.
His hair was soaked with sweat and a flush had actually risen on his pale face. His fists clenched tightly as all the bones in his body cracked as if they had been crushed.
Having heard of what happened, Mr. Eton rushed over. He sat outside the doorway of the resuscitation room, wide-eyed and full of surprise to see Isaac reawakened.
“It’s a miracle… A miracle from God…”
Isaac struggled to breathe like a fish drowning in water, fighting his way to swim toward the light. When oxygen finally filled his lungs, he regained his clarity and sat up from the bed.
He had one hand on his knee and looked a little worse for wear, but his gaze penetrated the glass wall and looked straight into Mr. Eton’s eyes.
He mouthed to the other man: I’m still alive.
Han Li’s medical team nervously yet efficiently ran tests on Isaac, but Isaac pushed them away and picked up a broken pill bottle from the ground to cut a blood-red gash down his own arm.
“Hey! What are you doing?!” Han Li shouted.
Right before their eyes, the wound on Isaac’s arm healed quickly without any scarring.
His healing ability was several times stronger than before!
“Oh, he succeeded! He succeeded! He obtained Di Xin’s power!” Mr. Eton, who had always seemed calm and collected, revealed a maniacal expression and cried, “Give me the compound! Give me the compound!”
He would soon recover from his brain disease like Song Zhi and Zhou Qing!
Jiang Jinghang fetched the compound but was too nervous to inject the needle into Mr. Eton’s body.
Mr. Eton impatiently grabbed Jiang Jinghang’s hand and stabbed the needle into his veins.
He closed his eyes as if he could feel the cells in his body being devoured and disintegrated. His breathing grew labored and the intense pain throughout his body felt like he was being crushed into the cracks of hell.
His bodyguards tensed and gathered around him.
Isaac, meanwhile, stepped out of the resuscitation room. He smoothed his hair back to reveal his fair forehead and dangerous face.
“You didn’t really think this compound would work on you, did you?” Isaac asked with a grin.
Mr. Eton looked at him with wide eyes. He tried to say something, but he was unable to breathe.
Fear, as well as anger from this deception, twisted together like a python that wanted strangle Isaac, but it was a pity that Isaac was unmoved.
Mr. Eton’s bodyguards heard Isaac’s words and drew their guns.
Isaac moved one of the guns out of the way and said with a light smile, “If Mr. Eton is no more, who will take over the Juli Corp?”
Eton reached out and tugged at the hem of Isaac’s shirt, trying with all his might to pull him down, but Isaac wouldn’t budge.
“You won’t be lonely. Cook is waiting for you on the other side. She was your most loyal child; you should have listened to her opinions more often.”
Eton’s hands lost their strength in despair and he tumbled out of his wheelchair.
His bodyguards found that he was no longer breathing.
“There’s no need to wait, he won’t end up like me. He’s not going to wake up again.”
